5 Dangerous Complications You Can Get from Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes

Does diabetes run in your family? When you have relatives that have been diagnosed with this disease, there’s a great chance you could have it, too. That’s because genetics is one of the factors that increase your risk for diabetes. But of course, that’s not the only thing that can cause you to develop diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes is a disease which arises when there is an excess of sugar or glucose in your blood. Now, naturally, we use glucose as a source of energy, but when there is a high amount of it in our blood, our body isn’t able to absorb it effectively. As a result, glucose is free to travel our circulation and deal damage to the different parts of our body.

What’s particularly lethal about Type 2 diabetes is that it doesn’t always present with very observable symptoms. You wouldn’t even know you have it until you develop complications such as:

  1. Heart disease

Leaving high blood sugar levels unchecked can affect the heart and blood vessels. This can result in a heart attack, stroke, angina, etc.

  2. Nerve damage

Aside from the blood vessel damage, high levels of glucose in the blood can also cause problems for your nerves. It starts with a numbing sensation from your extremities (hands and feet) until it eventually spreads upwards.

  3. Skin infections

When we get injured, our blood vessels supply damaged cells with nutrients to facilitate repair. But in the case of diabetes, the damage to blood vessels take open wounds longer to heal. This results in infections being a likely occurrence.

  4. Loss of vision

The eye is a sensitive organ that is attached to both nerves and blood vessels. When those are impaired, the eye is unable to execute is proper function as well. This leads to conditions, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and eventually, blindness.

  5. Kidney damage

The kidney functions to filter your blood from harmful substances. But when you have diabetes, the kidneys are forced to work harder in order to remove excess glucose in your blood. This added stress eventually leads them to ruin.

Diabetes is a frightening disease, isn’t it? That’s why you should take an active stance to prevent yourself and your loved ones from developing it.

And even if you have already been diagnosed with this condition, it’s never too late for you.
