Hypertension: Why Is It so Dangerous?

Hypertension Why Is It so Dangerous

When you have a headache or feel nauseous, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? For the most part, you just conclude it’s nothing serious and reach out for a glass of water, take a seat, or maybe pop a pill for your migraine.

What you don’t know is that it could have been a budding sign of hypertension.

Hypertension (also known as high blood pressure) is a condition that most often goes unnoticed because it rarely presents with any symptoms. And when it does, those symptoms are often insignificant (such as headaches, bouts of dizziness, etc.). This allows hypertension to continually get worse through time.

And if left untreated, hypertension can lead to:

  • Heart attack
Increased blood pressure can lead to a thickening and hardening of arteries. This puts an added strain to your body’s circulatory system which results in an increased risk for developing a heart attack, stroke, and other complications.
  • Aneurysm
An aneurysm is formed when your blood vessels become weak and bulge because of high blood pressure. If this continues without remedy, the aneurysm could rupture and become life-threatening.
  • Heart failure
When there is high pressure in your blood vessels, your heart is required to work harder than normal. The added stress causes the walls of your heart (specifically, the pumping chamber) to thicken. And because the thickened muscle has a more difficult time in pumping blood to meet what your body requires, it can eventually lead to heart failure.
  • Damaged blood vessels
Blood vessels serve as pathways throughout your body which distribute oxygen and nutrition. When they get weakened and narrowed, the many organs in your body will have a hard time maintaining normal function. At times, damaged blood vessels can even lead to kidney failure or loss of vision.
  • Dementia
When you have hypertension, your arteries have a tendency to become narrow or blocked. And that spells trouble for your brain. Without a consistent blood flow to your body’s command center, it can lead to a case of vascular dementia.

Scary, isn’t it? Who would have thought that a condition which doesn’t present with any noticeable symptoms can bring a whole lot of damage?

But before you tense up, remember that these complications are just a result of unregulated high blood pressure. It’s true that hypertension barely presents with symptoms but you can catch it in its tracks with regular blood pressure monitoring.
